True Pilsner is a sketch/improv troupe with an arsenal of sketches and songs that vary between being smart, satirical, silly, absurd and realistic. This ten person group brings playfulness and depth to their original work that promises to entertain.
The members of True Pilsner met while taking classes at The Second City conservatory program in Chicago. They formed the troupe in May of 2002 and began hosting and headlining a popular open microphone every Sunday night at Tequila Roadhouse. One year later, they celebrated their anniversary at their new venue, The Wise Fools Pub. Their Sunday night show, Fermented, consists of 2 guest improv troupes followed by True Pilsner. Every Fermented is a totally new show! The troupe performed at Chicagos Sketch Fest in 2003 and 2004 and have performed regularly at Frankie J's MethaDome Theater. In 2002, they had a successful run of their sketch show, From Desk Till Dawn at Trap Door Theater.
True Pilsner performed their sketch show, First Farewell Tour, to sold out audiences in Donny's Skybox Theater at The Second City in December of 2003. Second City has invited them back for a 9 week run starting on March 20 (Saturdays at 8:00 PM). The show will feature all new material. They are also in pre-production on a television pilot that is slated to be filmed in the spring. |

Every troupe has a "wacky, see aren't we funny?" bio. This is the one we used early on. People used to read it and then laugh so hard. They would say to themselves, "boy if their bio is this funny, then their material has to be funny!"
The comedy troupe, True Pilsner, has been a major force in the American improvisation and sketch scene for over 3 weeks. This diverse group of performers, 7 white men and two white women, first met when working at Victorias Secret on Chicagos Magnificent Mile. Always entertaining the other employees and customers with their wit and antics, they thought it would be fun to form a comedy troupe. They didnt. They continued their daily routines, miserable and unfulfilled.
After having never rehearsed and virtually forgetting about the group altogether, they finally got their big break when they were asked to perform at the truck and bus pedal show at McCormick Place. They arrived late and missed the show. Thats when The Tequila Roadhouse, a popular spot among people who have no interest in watching comedy, asked them to perform on Sunday nights. They jumped at the opportunity. And the reviews have been auspicious. Their comedy is original, smart and entertaining if you have never seen comedy before, says Arlene Carlson. (Mother of True Pilsner member Jimmy Dean Carlson.)
True Pilsner has risen to the top, but their great success has not changed them. They are still miserable and unfulfilled. So sit back, relax and take a sip of the delicately flavored golden comedy stylings of True Pilsner! |
